Battle Light Opera Group was founded in 1966, initially just performing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. While the Savoy operas are still a very popular part of our repertoire, we also perform operettas by other composers such as Strauss and Lehar. In recent years we have branched out into Musical Theatre, introducing more dance routines and lively staging (which is a challenge on our small stage!), while maintaining our reputation for high quality singing.

As well as our two main productions a year, we also put on a cabaret style Supper Concert each June, raising money for charity and sometimes for upgrading Hall theatrical facilities. These concerts provide opportunities to perform different repertoire, and provide a good opportunity for members to gain experience performing solos.

We also provide opportunities for members to become Directors and Musical Directors, and we use a variety of internal and external Directors and Musical Directors to widen the experience of the Society.

Members of the Society must be over 16 years old, but for some productions we need child performers. Where necessary we advertise in the local press when child auditions are to be held.

BLOG has long had the reputation of being a small, friendly society, and we strive to make new members feel welcome. We aim to produce high quality shows, but most importantly to have fun. As well as our rehearsals and performances, we hold several well attended social events each year, such as Quiz Nights, BBQs and Dinners.

We are the main users of Battle Memorial Halls, and have recently donated the raked seating to the Hall to provide a more theatrical experience for our audience (funded by a major fundraising campaign run by BLOG, the “Battle Theatre Appeal”). We have also raised funds to improve the stage lighting in the hall.

Items for Hire

Our Wardrobe has been expanding steadily and we can now offer for hire,
or possibly for sale, costumes from most of our recent past shows.

For example,
we have sets of costumes from The Mikado (including ladies’ Geisha wigs), Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Iolanthe (white dresses for fairies) and Guys and Dolls, (short red/white check skirts from ‘Bushel and a Peck,’ and black wrap-around skirts and ‘mink’ stoles from ‘Take Back Your Mink’).

We also have individual costumes suitable for various shows (eg Oklahoma ) concerts or pantomimes, some pretty full-length 60’s and 70’s dresses and men’s tailcoats.

If you are involved in a stage production, why not check with us first
before spending time (and money) making or buying your own props, hiring
constumes and/or staging.
They are Ideal for use in school productions,
pantomimes and other amateur shows.
